Westfield London Shopping Centre is the largest inner city shopping mall in Europe. In addition to over 265 shops Westfield Shopping Centre has a wide range of facilities including car parks, concourses, bars, restaurants and a multiplex cinema.

Imperium Integration Ltd were employed to design, install and maintain a networked Voice Alarm system comprising over 20 separate Racks networked together with fire rated Fibre Optic cable.

In conjunction with the Acoustic consultant Imperium designed and manufactured a system based upon Bosch Security’s Praesideo range of Fully digital Voice Alarm equipment. One of the key challenges was to find a range of loudspeakers that would not only provide excellent intelligibility and music performance but also be able to cope with the hugely differing acoustics presented by the stunning interior deign.

The system provides acoustic delay as required on every amplifier channel, as well as every loudspeaker circuit also being  provided with digital parametric equalisation to allow for the tailoring of the sound. The system utilises inaudible monitoring by means of end of line devices, which constantly check every loudspeaker line in the centre for open, short and ground fault conditions.

The control and management of such a huge and complex system was made intuitive through the provision of a series of custom created control screens. These control screens provide not only operational data such as zone selection and background music routing but also management data such as fault analysis and location, all through a touch screen interface.

Mersey Travel

The Mersey Tunnels

Up to 90,000 vehicles per day cross under the River Mersey via the two Mersey road tunnels: the Queensway which opened in 1934 linking Birkenhead with Liverpool, and the Kingsway opened in 1971 which links Wallasey with Liverpool.

Imperium Integration Ltd were engaged by Mersey Travel to an advisory role in the complex process of relocating and consolidating the existing Mersey Tunnel control rooms into a purpose designed combined control centre, located in the Georges Dock building.

During this process Imperium not only advised on current control room design and standards but also identified substantial cost savings through smart integration.

On completion of the new combined control room Imperium were then engaged to design and produce an interactive E-learning package for the tunnel control engineers, suitable for eventual inclusion into an HNC course.

The Mersey Tunnels are now regarded as the safest tunnels in the UK.

Imperium Integration Ltd were employed to design, install and maintain a networked Voice Alarm system comprising four separate rack locations, one in each of the stands, linked by a fire rated fibre optic ring which is installed in the stadiums existing ductwork.

Each of the stands are dramatically different and therefore each posed a completely unique acoustic challenge. The Arthur Wait stand is a very deep stand with a relatively low roof and a huge media gantry suspended across the middle of it. Seating 9,754 this provides the highest capacity of the four stands. The White Horse Lane Stand is a shallow but high stand seating 2,245 with the upper levels given over to 24 corporate boxes. The  Holmesdale Road Stand is a fairly modern two tier stand seating 5,341 in the lower tier and 2,806 in the upper tier. The Main Stand was opened in 1924 and seats 6,163 people. This stand was a particular challenge as it has both a peaked roof, a concave terracing area and the roof (and therefore the mounting point for the loudspeakers), doesn’t cover all the seating at the front of the stand.

One of the key challenges was to find a range of loudspeakers that would not only provide excellent intelligibility and music performance but also be able to cope with the hugely differing acoustics and restricted mounting positions posed by the stadium design.    Martin Audio’s latest Coaxial Differential Dispersion (CDD) range offered a unique solution. CDD technology delivers more consistent coverage than systems with fixed dispersion X° x Y° horns — projecting more output to the rear of the audience to distribute sound evenly front-to-back, while having wide horizontal coverage close-up. Coupled with the use of CSX -WR subwoofers, the range allowed us to provide a consistent sound across all four stands and also provide a rating of IP54 with weatherised water resistant grilles made from zinc plated mild steel with a powder coated finish.

The system provides acoustic delay to the rear loudspeakers in the Arthur Wait Stand and the under-hang loudspeakers in the Holmesdale Road Stand. Every loudspeaker circuit is also provided with digital parametric equalisation to allow for the tailoring of the sound, not only in the four very different acoustic environments presented by each stand, but throughout the concourses and entertainment areas. The system utilises inaudible monitoring by means of end of line devices, which constantly check every loudspeaker line in the stadium for open, short and ground fault conditions.

There are two control points, one in the stadiums match day control room and a fall back position in the media gallery. The match day control room is equipped with a zoned microphone control console, that also provides visual indication of the system status. Further system information can be obtained at the systems Network Controller in the main stand rack, or remotely from anywhere via a dedicated remote access facility.

The system is linked to the media gallery, where match day music, interviews, video footage and live pitch side presentations are broadcast across the system. These feeds are mixed and controlled from a QSC TouchMix 16 compact digital mixer, complete with touchscreen and iPad support, allowing the club to provide a professional match day experience.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport (Robin Hood Airport) is a commercial international airport located at the former Vulcan bomber base at Finningley. At  3,000 yards long its runway is currently the second longest in Northern England. The RAF Base was converted and opened commercially in 2005.

The brief for this project was to provide a secure environment utilising the best of integration available at the time. The systems we provided were;

The Airport was a new build and as such allowed the use of the most up to date technologies available, with end to end IP CCTV featuring a combination of conventional digital recorders (for the Car Park cameras) and Raid 1 NVR Digital storage for the terminal building and apron cameras. All these cameras are displayed on a custom built monitor wall running the length of the control room.

The access control system was also an IP based solution, with specific design features aimed squarely at the airport market such as integrated passenger reconciliation and extended opening times for passenger doors. All of this was controlled from a custom designed and manufactured control room console which housed all the separate control systems and the CCTV spot monitors.

The Voice evacuation system is a fully digital solution with multiple microphones and zones, catering for the numerous staff and passenger announcements. The system comprises hundreds of high quality ceiling loudspeakers in many areas but also features passive arrays in large open lounges and the check in area. The arrivals area of the concourse is served by two Intellivox powered steerable arrays, which were fitted semi flush into the end of the terminal building and provide extremely high levels of both audibility and intelligibility in the acoustically challenging, double height glass and steel arrivals area.

To assist people with hearing issues, all PA/VA announcements are also broadcast on wide area induction loops, which were run through a loop array arrangement to prevent adjacent loops interfering with each other. All the customer service and check in counters are also equipped with counter loop systems.

The police and customs were provided with there own CCTV systems which they control and monitor separately via a topographical Imperium front end and securely recorded onto the integrated NVR.

Access to Bus and specialist drop off lanes are controlled by a combination of intercom systems and ANPR cameras allowing for the best combination of security and functionality.

In addition to the terminal building we also provided similar systems to all the concessions, the fire station and even the control tower.

Elland Road is the home of Leeds United F.C. The Stadium currently has a capacity of 37,890 and is the 13th Largest football stadium in England. The East stand, when opened in 1993, was the largest cantilever stand in the world housing 10,000 seats in the lower tier and 7,000 seats in the upper tier.

Imperium Integration Ltd installed and maintain a networked Voice Alarm system comprising two separate rack locations in the East and West stands, linked by a fire rated fibre optic ring which is installed on the roof of the stands. The depth of the North, East and West stands means that two rows of Loudspeakers are employed, with the system providing acoustic delay to the rear loudspeakers. Every loudspeaker circuit is also provided with digital parametric equalisation to allow for the tailoring of the sound in the four very different acoustic environments presented by each stand.

The solution utilises a combination of 100 Volt Line loudspeakers and Low Impedance performance loudspeakers. The majority of the stadium bowl is covered by means of full frequency Martin Audio AM12 and AM15 loudspeakers, with the huge East stand covered by Martin Audio’s  AM906 large format stadium horns supplemented by AS118 subwoofers driven by MA Series power amps.

As the stadium manager needs to know if his system is working properly in advance of a fixture, the system utilises end of line devices to check the integrity of every loudspeaker line, throughout the stadium bowl, Internal spaces and even the external loudspeakers.

There are two control points, one in the stadiums match day control room and a fall back position in the security office. Each location is equipped with a zoned microphone control console, that also provides visual indication of the system status. Further system information can be obtained at the systems Network Controller in the West stand rack, or remotely from anywhere via a dedicated VLAN.

The system is linked to the on site Leeds United Studio, where match day music, interviews, video footage and live pitch side presentations are broadcast across the system. There is also a built in limiter on the system to prevent any over excited match day presenters from ” overdriving ” the system and severely affecting broadcast quality.

Lochrin Square is a multi-use office building in Edinburgh’s Financial District. We installed and maintain a full Emergency Voice Evacuation System. The system is a fully digital system linked to the Fire Detection system. The system is configured to provide phased evacuation across the site, with the floors above any activation also being triggered into evacuation and the floor below into Alert.
